Earaches in Children 2-5 Years

Ways to Help Prevent Earaches

If your child has suffered from earaches in the past, you know just how much pain is involved. Try these tips to help prevent earaches from starting in the first place.

  • Ensure your child isn’t around second-hand smoke
  • Ensure your child is eating and drinking in an upright position — so that fluid doesn’t enter their ears and Eustachian tubes
  • Limit the amount of time your child spends with other children who have colds
  • Avoid inserting cotton-tipped swabs, lamb’s wool or earplugs into your child’s ears since they may cause irritation
  • Keep your child’s ears dry — especially if they’ve been in water
  • Keep your child out of dusty areas or areas with airborne debris — this may cause an overproduction of earwax
  • Speak to your child’s doctor if your child suffers from frequent earaches associated with a cold
