It is important to read the product label every time you purchase over-the-counter medication, even if you have used it before. Formulations can change over time which can affect how the product works or how much you should take. Never assume a product is the same as the last one you bought.
The product label includes the carton, bottle label and sometimes a package insert. It provides a brief summary of the most important things you should know about the medication before you use it. This includes, for example, what the medication is used for and when it should be taken.
Remember to compare the labels if you are taking two or more OTC medications so that you are not doubling up on active ingredients or taking two (or more) medications together that shouldn’t be taken together.
